Applications That You Must Install after Installing Ubuntu


Linux is now the growing Operating Systems in the computer world. First people learn about the computer using the windows and later switch to Linux for advanced tasking. Linux is an opensource OS and also considered to have better graphics then the Windows. Ubuntu is the popular Operating system among all linux based Operating Systems.
So often people get confused about the applications they must install for better Ubuntu experience. Some of the recommend applications like Open-office comes by default with Ubuntu and some should be installed by the user manually. So here are most recommended applications for Ubuntu users based on different categories.

1. Chromium Web Browser

Chromium web browser is the Linux version of Google Chrome web browser. Though there are many web browsers available for Ubuntu like Firefox, Opera, etc but it is supposed to be the fastest and safer browser for Linus as the primary browser.
You can install Chromium browser directly from the Ubuntu Software Center by searching Chromium in the search box or could download the browser from the Google chrome Official download page.

2. VLC Media Player

VLC media player is an Opensource Media player for Linux and also among the best alternatives for windows media player. It comes with a codec that supports almost all types of media formats. It is not just only a media player but also works as an encoder, streamer and also highly recommended for Ubuntu users.

3. GIMP Image Editor

GIMP is a free and opensource application for Linux mainly used for editing graphics in Linux.GIMP can accomplish essential image editing tasks such as resizing, editing, and cropping photos, photomontages combining multiple images, and converting between different image formats. It is the main alternative for popular Graphics editor “Adobe Photoshop”.

4. Mozilla Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a popular lightweight mail, News and RSS client for Ubuntu which is under the Mozilla Corporation. Mainly it is used as the Email client which supports different email accounts (POP, IMAP, Gmail). It is integrated with spam file and allows wide organization of mails. More features can be added to the application by installing extensions.

5. Wine

When people switch to Linux from windows they got lots of problems using the Linux applications and dream about using the Windows application on Ubuntu Linux. Wine is all that application that helps running Windows application on Linux. Wine is not an Emulator but a Compatibility Layer providing alternative implementations of the DLLs that Windows programs call and make the program run.

6. Pidgin Internet Messenger

Pidgin is a graphical, modular instant messaging client for Linux. It allows users to chat over multiple protocols like Msn, Yahoo, Gmail and more accounts at once. The application window gets minimized and the icon apperars at the system tray. So when a new message arrives, you will be notified with the icon blink.

7. Cheese

Cheese is an application for Ubuntu to take pictures and record videos from your webcam. It also provides the graphical effects to your capture in order to please the user’s play instinct.

8. Beagle

Beagle is a search tool for Linux or can be said as the Linux desktop-independent service which transparently and unobtrusively keeps track of your data and provides searching and indexing capabilities. It can index filesystems, Pidgin logs, evolution mail and data, RSS and other and ultimately make your search fast, easy and reliable.

9. Advanced desktop effects settings (CCSM)

Advanced desktop effects settings is the opencompositing project that bring virtual 3D effects to your system that improves the usability of the X windows system and provide increased productivity.
After you install the application you can enhance your graphics and add extra effects to your desktop. Top open the application goto SystemPreferences and compizconfig settings manager.

10. Docky

It is a dock application for Ubuntu that makes opening common applications  and managing windows easier and quicker. It is full integrated into the GOME desktop which means it works just perfect without any settings or configuration.
After you install Docky a cool dock menu with the applications icon appears on the center-bottom of the desktop like the docky menu in Macbuntu which makes your Ubuntu desktop exactly look like Mac OSX.
